Preserving more than 100 years of Empire history and culture, the Empire Area Museum was founded in the early 1970s. The museum is made up of the main building, a one-room schoolhouse, the 1911 Hose House, an old gas station and much more. Open from May to October, the Sleeping Bear Point Maritime Museum displays exhibits on the US Coast Guard, Great Lakes shipping history and the US Life-Saving Service.
